JUNETEENTH

Thursday, June 19th, as we remember June 19th, 1865 when the last US slaves in Galveston, Texas were finally told that they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by Lincoln three years earlier, on September 22, 1862. The Juneteenth flag uses a star to symbolize freedom (and also a nod to the Texas state flag). The burst represents a nova, symbolizing a new beginning. The arc represents the horizon and the promise of the future, and the red, white and blue shows that former slaves are all free Americans.
